January 22, 2016

Dear Julie…my husband & I have been married almost 3 yrs come March,it has been a rocky road to the point most days I wanna just give up…one of my biggest issues with my husband is that he is very selfish.I love him dearly but how can I spend the rest of my life with someone that does not seem to have my best interest at heart? Please give me some honest suggestions…thank u. –Rocky Road

Dear Rocky Road: I think if we’re honest most couples would admit the first years of marriage are often the hardest. So don’t give up, my friend.

As for your husband, we all start out selfish (crying for love or milk or a fresh diaper). As we grow, hopefully, we learn about patience and meeting other peoples’ needs as well as our own. Sadly, some children are never taught these things. Perhaps that’s your husband’s situation. Or maybe he’s just oblivious.

I believe you and your husband are great candidates for Christian marital counseling. (Go to your pastor for direct help or for names of counselors he recommends.) A Christian mediator will give you both a chance to express your feelings and will intervene until you are both heard. Then s/he will guide you along a path to reconciliation.

The good news is you love him dearly. That will take you a long way while you are working through these things. Hang on! It will be worth it in the end.

God bless, Julie
