Facing our challenges head-on!
Challenges Women Face

September 15, 2017

Dear Julie:

I’m legally married but I have been separated from my husband since 2008 and don’t have any intentions of being with him. We are still legally married because I haven’t had the money for a divorce, and he does not want to give me the divorce. I’m currently with someone, and we love each other. I’m not sure what I should do. –Still Married

Dear Still Married:

Was your husband unfaithful to you? That is the only biblical grounds we are given for divorce. Was he abusive so that you needed to get away to be safe? That’s grounds for separation until he gets his act together and you feel safe with him. If he was faithful and not abusive, why did you two separate? Is there a reason why you two can’t reconcile? Why doesn’t he want to give you the divorce?

Without more facts, I can’t really suggest what you should do. All I can tell you at this point is to pray for wisdom. God will give it to you if you earnestly seek it. I know He is all about reconciliation so I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the direction He guides you to. On the other hand, He tells us in Romans 12 that, as far as is possible, we should be at peace with all men. Maybe this isn’t possible with your ex, I don’t know. So pray.

God bless. Julie
