Challenges Women Face

Dear Julie:
I struggle with an alcohol addiction.—Struggling

Dear Struggling:

I’m really sorry. I know how hard it can be to overcome an addiction. But, by God’s grace and help, it can be done. You must get help. Do you go to AA where you’ll get the accountability that is needed? They really are a good group. Here’s what I’d suggest.
1. Ask God to help you overcome it. Even better, ask Him to take the desire away.
2. Join a group like AA for help or find a trusted friend who will keep you accountable.
3. Avoid alcohol and places where it will be served.
4. Understand that even a single drink will take you where you don’t want to be. SO NOT EVEN A SIP. Avoid it like the plague.
5. Don’t beat yourself up. Some people have a genetic makeup that cannot tolerate even a drop of alcohol. If that’s your situation, it’s not your fault. But you still have to deal with it.
6. Know that GOD LOVES YOU and wants to help you.
7. Ask trusted friends to pray for you. I’m asking our readers to join me in praying for you.

Readers, what else do you suggest?

God bless,

  1. Maggie says:

Julie, for those facing chemical addictions wanting a Christ-centered recovery approach seek out Celebrate Recovery groups. They are a 12-step program based on Biblical teachings. Meetings are in most cities. The program includes worship, teachings, testimonies, small group share groups, sponsors, trained leadership, and extended Bible Step Studies. The Step Studies are very extensive and lives are changed. Our family has found hope and healing through Celebrate Recovery. Jesus Christ is our Higher Power! The website above has a very good description of the program. has a meeting locator. I hope this person finds healing.
