Facing our challenges head-on!
Challenges Women Face

November 29, 2016

Dear Julie,

I got baptized this year for the first time in my life. I’m still new to being a Christian. I always believed that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but I was never baptized nor did I attend church as I was supposed to.

Since I have been baptized and joined the church, I have been trying to live right and trying to build my spiritual bond with the Lord. My question is by me being new to this lifestyle how do I know when the Lord is speaking to me? How do I pray without feeling like I’m doing this all wrong. Please help. –Feeling Inadequate

Dear Feeling Inadequate:

You couldn’t be in a better position, my sister in Christ, because Jesus knows your heart and knows you want to grow and show your love for Him by word and deed.

He is so loving and forgiving, He doesn’t worry whether you say everything “just right” when you pray. Just tell Him what’s in your heart. He will know what you mean. It doesn’t matter whether those around you understand. Your prayer isn’t to them anyway, right?

Now, how to know when He is speaking to you. That takes discernment. The Lord will never tell you anything that contradicts His word (the Bible). So, for example, if you hear a “voice” telling you to do something wrong, like lying, stealing, or killing someone, then that voice does not belong to God. One Old Testament verse tells what the Lord does require of us: “To do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God” (Micah 6:8).

Over time, as you pray and study the Bible, you’ll become more familiar with what God requires; but while you are learning, find some trusted mature believers and ask them to help when you are confused.

Think on this verse when you feel inadequate. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore . . . I delight in weaknesses . . . for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (II Corinthians 12:9-10)

God bless you, Julie
