 Facing our challenges head-on!
Challenges Women Face

November 1, 2016

Hi Julie:
I want to start by saying I met this guy online, we have been chatting for over a year he is 15 years younger than I am we seem to hit it off well. I am concerned because of the age difference. He says he loves me. He lives in Nigeria and wants to come to Chicago.

This is my first time online dating and I am leery because of the horror stories that you hear about online dating. Also, I’m concerned because I would have to send an invite to the embassy of Nigeria in order for him to come to the U.S. I don’t know if he may be trying to use me for citizenship. What should I do? Also he is going to flip the bill to come see me. In the beginning he did ask for me to pay half on his flight.–International Online Dating (IOD)

Dear IOD:

Thank you for writing. What should you do? I’d say run the other direction. This relationship seems fraught with problems–not the age difference as much as the complications with citizenship, immigration, and, yes, the possibility that he is using you. There are plenty of eligible men on this side of the ocean. Maybe your chances for relational success are better with them.

God bless, Julie
