CHALLENGES WOMEN FACE aka DEAR JULIE

Missing My Son

Facing Our Challenges Head-On!

November 27, 2015

Dear Julie: I wish to remain anonymous please…here’s my question- 13 months ago my 15 yr old son passed away- my priest assured me he is in heaven which gives me comfort. But there are sooo many people who claim to get signs form loved ones- feathers, seeing a cardinal, etc. How could people possibly be in heaven AND here to send signs? I have dreamed of my son twice but that’s my mind doing it. I did feel him in the wind once— but i just don’t understand. Thank you for your time.–Missing my Son

Dear Missing: I am so sorry for your tragic loss. Losing a child is the hardest thing I’ve ever been through, so I can identify with you. It sounds like your priest knew your son’s spiritual condition and is, therefore, able to assure you he is in heaven. Cling to that blessed hope. Jesus assured his followers that he was going to prepare a place for them. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:1-3)

In heaven, your son is in God’s presence, daily praising him with the other saints who have gone on before us. You will see him again. I feel confident neither he nor God wants you to continue to grieve for him. Instead they’d have you look forward with hope, because Jesus is coming again for the rest of us. In the book of I Thessalonians 4:13-18, we read, “We do not want you to . . . grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him . . . .”

I don’t discredit those who feel they’ve heard from their loved ones in some mysterious way. I believe God comforts us in whatever way he chooses. But it is God showing mercy rather than the souls of the departed roving the earth. They’re too busy in heaven praising and serving the Lamb who saved them.

Your pain is still fresh. Don’t be hard on yourself. Submit yourself to God’s tender care and let him heal your wounds. Rest in his loving arms, knowing that he will lead you on home to your son at the proper time. May God bless you, dear one. Julie
