CHALLENGES WOMEN FACE aka DEAR JULIE

Waiting for Sex

Facing Our Challenges Head-On!

September 29, 2015

Dear Julie: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. From the first we decided to remain abstinent and wore promise rings. But it’s getting harder and harder to remain true to that vow. What harm could it do if we had sex once in a while? We really love each other and want to get married one day, but we’re only 16 and have a lot of school ahead of us. –Tired of Waiting

Dear Tired of Waiting: You and your boyfriend must do everything in your power to remain true to your vows of abstinence. You ask what harm it could do if you had sex once in a while. The answer is: you could get pregnant. Now don’t get me wrong—babies are wonderful—but they deserve mature parents who can care for them.

I respect you and your boyfriend for remaining abstinent these two years. And I believe you can continue to do so IF you build walls of protection around your relationship. Date in groups only, keep your curfews, do not engage in passionate kissing or heavy petting. Ask friends to keep you accountable. Even more importantly, ask God to protect you and keep you pure before marriage. It’s hard but, with God’s help, you can do it.
